Vishu 2006
>> Monday, March 12, 2007
Vishu is a festival widely celebrated in Kerala. Well, it is the Malayalam New Year. We keep the Vishu Kani on this day. This involves decorating the altar with those lovely yellow flowers, keeping out the jewellery, lighting the lamps - such fun! Vishu will be here in another month - the date is 15-April this year.
Here is Guruji surrounded by some of the jewellery... :) See the conch? It was given to us by Geetu's Mom-in-law. Sad to say, neither Pinch nor I have mastered the art of playing it yet!

Does the jewellery have any special significance in this photo; is it an offering?
I can blow a conch. It's fun, and a little like blowing up a very thick balloon:)
I missed these comments! Sthira, the jewellery is not an offering. It represents prosperity, I believe. The dominant colour is yellow - so bananas, gold, ripe mangoes are kept outside. Will find out more.
Nice post, its a really cool blog that you have here, keep up the good work, will be back.
Warm Regards
